part 1: who is a stylist
stylist [from the verb to style, in the past wardrobe stylist]
stylist / celebrity: a consultant who selects the clothing advertising campaigns, music videos, or any public appearances made by celebrities or public figures
stylist / creative: part of a larger creative team who works with a fashion designer and his team to put together a collection
stylist / fashion: a consultant or an editor who selects the clothing and gives ideas for published editorials (magazine or web); a fashion editor works also on fashion contents for a magazine.
part 2: the styling method
a stylist represents whatever he/she wants in a fashion image: aesthetics, social issues, reality, fantastic worlds, underground cultures,
it depends on the approach a stylist can either represent him/herself on a photo or a totally different world.
two opposites in fashion: anna dello russo and grace coddington.
in general, the most important things for a stylist are his/her own cultural background, curiosity and being a visionairy.
the cultural background is very linked to curiosity. a stylist should know as much as he/she can about cinematography, photography, art, literature, social changes: culture in all its shapes is fundamental.
culture let you spot any reference and let you understand all the images that surround us everyday and this is possible only through a daily visual/ cultural research.
knowing the archives is the most important thing to foresee the future.
the vision is the result of the knowledge and the sensibility of a creative person. this is what the fashion industry wants now:
identity and a vision
this is also the main problem of the industry nowadays. its hard to see and create something new when we can reach every corner of the world just with an app: facebook, instagram, tumblr, pinterest
part 3: styling history from ray petri to lotta volkova
